Ontogeny by Tom Pemberton

Ontogeny Recapitulates Phylogeny

Bronze on Walnut Base • Edition of 12 • H 12” • $3600

The physiological development of an individual is shown in this sculpture. Supporting the egg are five roots representing the joys and agonies of past generations. Some of the roots grow randomly while others are tightly entwined. In our lineage, however, is an order and structure which determines that an egg evolves into a member of the same species and a child perpetuates the life of the family. Inside the large egg are the lovers, each with an individual ancestry. The lovers separate to reveal a shining golden egg symbolizing the promise of a new generation.

Ontogeny is finished in the classical manner with patina (color) applied with a torch and brush. The surface is then waxed and polished by hand.
